Jim was walking out of the house when his phone rang.

Miller.

“You’re up early after your hot date.”

Miller didn’t reply. “I caught a case this morning.”

“Had to leave the lady’s bed, I hope.”

“I could ask the same thing. Word is…”

“Already? Dammit.” Jim didn’t want to discuss his personal life now that he finally had a chance to razz Miller. The guys had been trying to match him up for a while. They’d never let the thing with Jill go for what it was. Whatever it was.

“I’m guessing you didn’t call to exchange locker room talk.” Jim stood in the gravel drive that led back to the taxidermy shop. He could make out the flat roof of Calvin’s house just over the shop’s top. Without much thought, he started walking that way.

“Yeah. Not so much. It’s that body.”

“Which body?” He tightened up. “One we’ve previously discussed, or one I might be thought responsible for its demise?” He stopped walking and looked to the horizon. Names raced through his head.

“I found out the details on the teenager. The girl who knew Emilee Beck.”

“Yeah?”

“She was last seen, along with the Green girl and an older man, at a service station near the Meadows Mall.”

“Shit. Madlin was only a kid. You think she was working?”

“Report says buying. Probably small-time. Either way. It got her killed. The other thing: the knife work was not ritual. At least not in the normal satanic kind of ritual. Normal. If there’s a normal. Her limbs were not at the crime scene.”

“Fuck. Missing?”

“Cut off. Gone.”

“The male?”

“He was in about the same condition. But turns out he is…was a confidential informant. Possible he was the target for working with Vice. Got found out. Either way…”

“You’re not connecting them to Emilee Beck, then?”

Miller hesitated. “Probably connected to your ass, Bean. By way of Beck or by way of plain bad luck, I’m not sure.”

Jim started walking again. “Harsh, man.”

Miller huffed. “Send me what you got. Likely the Beck girl is mixed in somehow, but I’m not sure how she ties in to these two. Seems backward to torch Emilee’s place and slice Maddy and the Green girl up.”

“Madlin’s not linked to the hunting resort, is she?”

“Resort?” Miller grunted.

“I’m heading out to Utah today to check up on the Ward’s hunting resort. The Preserve, they call it. I have a hunch AJ and Emilee are tucked in tight there. I just don’t want you to think I’ve skipped town if I lose touch.”

“Watch yourself. Lots of guys with guns in a place like that. Don’t get anyone shot. Especially you or AJ Ward. My record can’t take any more of your craziness. I don’t want to get busted back now. How will I afford my new girl?”

“Funny, man. Not sure how you afford her now.” Jim disconnected. He found himself standing at the entrance to the deck surrounding Calvin’s ritzy contemporary home. The entirety of the house on the upper level was tinted glass from knee height up. The grays and tans of
